MOVING COMPANY ESSENTIALS
Itemize your items to be moved. If you can’t itemize all of your belongings,
ask for an hourly rate based on the size of your residence or estimated weight
of your residence.
Before you pick a mover, check to make sure that they have a NCUC license. If
your movers or moving company cannot provide you with this information, then
they are not reputable.
Contact the Better Business Bureau to verify membership. Check with your
local BBB, and the BBB online reliability program.
Ask for references.
Ask for your estimates in writing. Check to make sure you are getting a
guaranteed estimate. If you know your inventory, and have supplied it to the
moving company, get a guaranteed estimate in writing.
Packing your own items can save you $$. Pack your valuable possessions
yourself. Your jewelry, treasured family heirlooms, or other valuable items
should be packed by you, and taken with you, not on the moving truck. If these
items are lost or damaged by your movers, the insurance replacement value cannot
replace the personal value the items have to you.
Pack carefully. A mover is not responsible for items packed by the customer.
Heavier items should be packed in small boxes. Don’t throw everything into one
big box. Keep your boxes below 50 pounds. Get reliable boxes in different sizes.
Ask your moving company for wardrobe boxes. Use good judgment when you are
packing. If it’s too heavy for you to carry, then your box probably has too much
in it.
Provide as much information to the moving company as you can. If you know
that there are stairs, long distances from the moving truck to your location, no
elevators, small doorways, etc, provide this information. The more details you
provide, the more accurate your moving quote will be.
If you have any changes to your move, inform your moving company. Open
communication is the key to a hassle free move.
